Lying shipper--do not buy this product

I cannot review the product (originally listed for $1,000.00 dollars more), because Crates Direct pulled a switcheroo and sent an inferior, cheaper model whose true price IS $1,199.99 and not the $2,999.99 they charged me but refuse to alter.

If you order this one, don't expect to get it.

Too much of a good thing?

This set is surprisingly good in the following ways:

After owning this set for four months, I am astonished at how BAD other televisions look. When my friend bought a 32 inch WEGA (non XBR) and had us over to take a look, I was appalled by the overdriven picture, extensive red push and large gap between scan lines. It was like watching television through a set of venetian blinds. The same with another friend's Toshiba flat tube set.

Further, if you're a gadget-type person. you'll appreciate the fantastically in-depth service menu. Every conceivable internal setting of the television can be accessed through the remote. We have dropped the red push altogether and the picture is considerably more pleasing than when the set was new.

Finally, the resolution of the picture tube is so much better than standard televisions that flaws, edits, and manipulations in NTSC sources can easily be detected with the naked eye. This could be a turn-off for some casual owners; other television sets are too blurry and inaccurate to reveal the flaws in a broadcast. Not the XBR! With this set, the difference between high quality and inferior broadcasts is as plain as day.

To sum up, this television is superior in every way. In fact, its superiority makes some common NTSC programming look pretty bad. Some owners won't like it, preferring to hide the flaws in the signal by watching through an inferior set.

I Love My TV

I bought this TV last year and I love it. I have an elliptical satellite dish
and a Toshiba HDTV receiver.
The picture quality is what sold me on this model, whether you are watching the news or a DVD on a
progressive scan player (with component video cables)
Sony gives you the option of four different screen modes, from vivid to
'pro'...that is all picture adjustments in the default position.
The control over every aspect of the picture is daunting at first but in no
time you'll have the four picture modes perfectly tailored to your tastes.
The "split screen" is very cool, you can watch a DVD and monitor a program, minimize or maximize the two screens and have the sound
from whichever source you want Even the built in speaker system is sufficient for my taste, to me the picture quality is of utmost importance.
I could go on and on raving about this TV.
I only have one regret, the price keeps going down!

The best 32" TV you can buy

We've had our 32" XBR450 for about three months, and the whole family loves it. Coupled with a progressive scan DVD player (we have the Sony DVP-NS700P, also a great product), the picture is nothing short of amazing. Even VHS tapes look better with this TV, thanks to the line-doubling up-conversion process the signal goes through. The sound quality is also excellent--even has treble/bass adjustments--and has surprising bass output for a TV set. The picture-and-picture feature (scalable side-by-side twin views) is really cool; however, be aware that you won't be able to view two channels at once if you get satellite service. (You can still view different sources simultaneously, though.) The unit also has plenty of inputs, including two component video inputs (for high-definition sources) so you can hook up a DVD player as well as an HDTV receiver. While the price is high, for the quality, features and flexibility, you can't beat this Sony for 32" models. I would recommend this TV to anyone who can afford it.

What a view!

This TV is the best we ever purchased. Of course going from a 19 inch model to the 32 inch is a change, the clarity of televsion, video and DVD's is incredible. We read many reviews of Sony WEGA from many sources. Though we spent some bucks, it was well worth it!

Keeps on ticking...

I've had this TV for more than 2 years and it still works as well as it did on Day One. I found a stand for it at Target so it sits about 18" off the ground now, and it is like being in a movie theater. I've been very pleased with this TV and would recommend it if it were still on the market.

***I wrote the above review In 2007. It's now late 2008 and I'm still happy with this TV. I figure I'll keep it until the day it dies--and hopefully by that time there will be cheap flat-screen TVs with some great technology for me to move up to.

***I took the plunge in July of 2009 and bought a new 50" plasma. I gave this TV to a neighbor in exchange for some work in our house, and he loves it. It's still working fine for him. (April 2010)

Great bargain

I have had my set since November 2003, one of the best deals on the market for a projection HDTV monitor. No troubles out of this set, excellent picture, lots of features and inputs.

Nice tv but.........

I have one of these televisions and after two years a convergence thingie went out on it. Looked like you were seeing everything in double-vision. Luckily I had an extended warranty on it as it would have cost 600.00 to fix it. They had it about a week. It does have a great picture but I am afraid JVC will not be getting anymore of my money in the future. I also had a JVC stereo receiver that went out in five years. Every other stereo receiver I have had in my life I had to give it away. Apparently none of the letters in JVC stand for dependability

Would give it ZERO stars if that were an option...

We purchased this television in April 03 and loved everything about it until a year and 3 months later. As we were watching t.v. one night, all of a sudden we heard a loud pop and the screen went blue. My husband got the manual out and tried to get it working but to no avail. Unfortunately, I did not buy the extended warranty because I thought that it was covered for more than a year. I called JVC and was told that I would have to call and have it repaired myself. We ended up having to send it to a shop and paid an extra $500.00 for the repair. I was more than upset because in my opinion, when you purchase a $1600.00 television, it should last longer than a year before needing repair unless you damage it yourself, which we did not. The receipt for the repair says they had to replace an output and install a CRT insulator kit. I swore then that I would never buy another JVC product again, but was at least glad that our t.v. was working again. Now, two and a half years later, it is going out AGAIN. This is the biggest waste of money I have ever spent and I am so disappointed with JVC. I am not usually one to write reviews, as a matter of fact, this is the first I have ever done, but I felt compelled to do so because I am so disgusted. For those of you who have already purchased, I hope that you never have to go through the ordeal that we have had to go through. For those of you considering purchasing, I would look into buying another brand. Instead of wasting another $500 to have this t.v. fixed for maybe another two years, we are just going to buy another t.v.

Excellent TV for being an 'early' HD model.

I just bought one of these used. It is my first HDTV (not counting watching HD TV through my computer.)

As these reviews are almost all from when the TV was new, I figured I would write a review from the current perspective.

First, the downsides:
It only handles 1080i, not 1080p. Plenty for everything I've thrown at it; but those who have Blu-ray may want a 'real' 1080p TV.
It has two 1080i-compatible component connections, and one DVI. No HDMI; although the DVI port works just fine connected to my HDMI-output HD DVD player via an HDMI to DVI cable.
It has dual (now obsolete) NTSC tuners, but no digital ATSC tuner. Therefore, the tuner is essentially useless.
The picture-in-picture can handle two HD inputs, but it can be a little flaky.
It is a rear-projection TV, which means that it has a rather limited viewing angle. The picture looks great as long as your eyes are level with the top of the screen or lower, but playing Wii games that require standing up on it are difficult, because the picture dims very quickly when viewed from above. Likewise, the sideways viewing angle is about 90° to be at full brightness. It drops off quickly thereafter.

Now, the upsides:
Finding one used can be cheap. Potentially significantly cheaper than a new HDTV.
The CRT-based projection system means that it doesn't have a high-power light bulb to burn out. The one I bought is now six years old; and the picture is very bright. (when viewed from proper angles.)
In spite of the admonitions that the DVI port isn't computer-compatible, it works perfectly with my MacBook Pro. It supports 720p, or 1080i; with excellent picture reproduction.
But, the DVI port does not have sound, so even through an HDMI adapter, you still have to use analog stereo audio (or use a receiver.)
The picture looks wonderful, wether from an ATSC tuner (in a VCR/DVD Recorder, connected via component,) HD DVD, computer, or Wii.
The sound, while only stereo with faked surround, is good. I have found no need to re-connect my receiver. Good volume, good tone, and enough bass.

It's about time but what were they thinking on that price?

Finnally Sony is trying to catch up to the competition. But with a huge price tag more then double their competitors of the same size hdtv set who are they kidding. And of course this model is not available anywhere. You can not even find it on sony's web site. So amazon knows about it but that just means they plan to sell it in the us. Who knows when, and at $...I don't see them selling to many. Don't get me wrong I love sony products everything I own is sony, if this product was priced comparably with it's competition I'd be at the store right now picking it up. Looks like the competition is still got the upper hand on HDTV. I hope sony corrects this soon as it's almost football season.

The best TV Ever

This TV is excellent. I watch HDTV movie channels through Dish Network and the picture is incredible. Compared to the huge projection TV's this TV's picture is unbeatable. It compacts 1080 lines into a space of 34 inches as opposed to 64 or another big screen size. This tv makes going to the movies obsolete.

Good you can't get this anymore

I got theis from Dish after a protracted fight to get the RCA 40" RP machine repaired. ( They couldn't fix it after 4 months)
This machine freaks out when I touch it. I cleaned the screen,or have a power failure, the computer flips out. It flips through the menus, automatically reduces the volume to zero, and goes into the setup menu when powered on. This thing is possessed by the Devil!
My second, and last RCA/Thompson product. This is garbage, even if free. Don't even think of buying RCA/Thompson unless you like headaches.

Great TV

I have the RCA D34W20 that was sold by Dish network as part of the HDTV in a box package. The only difference is the logo on the front. At first I wasn't sure what to expect but after I set it up I was amazed at the HD picture quality. Out of the box the brightness (Black Level) is way to high. I set mine at about 25-35%. After fine tuning the color and brightness the picture looks phenomenal. I couldn't imagine going back to standard TV. The TV is somewhat of a monster weighing in at 170 pounds so you will need to make sure that whatever you set in on can support the weight.

I have the Dish Network Private Label RCA 34"

This TV is the same as the one advertised by Dish Network for 999.00 all inclusive HDTV package. I highly recommend this package if your are interested in true HDTV. I attached a Zenith Silver Sensor antenna to receive Over The Air Network broadcasts and the total package is incredible. Dish made a deal with RCA to manufacture this D34W20 TV and put a Dish Logo on the front instead of an RCA logo

I have loved this tv

This tv has been a great purchase for me. Got it for $1,000 at Sams Club (floor model) and I have been very happy with it. Tons of options, great picture, tons of inputs. Everything you need in an hdtv. The only problem is the weight, but you probably knew that already. If you don't need a huge screen, then this is a great choice. Picture tubes give the best picture.

I like CRT display and this one delivers. It is the best monitor at an outstanding price. RCA is made by Thompson, a very well respected manufacturer of professional video cameras. I trust their engineering and this set delivers!

Total Garbage!

I rated this at 1 star because there was no zero option. The manual is ridiculous, the supplied cables were defective and their customer service line is absolute torture to get through. You have to sit directly in front of the set to view a decent picture. I had numerous problems with the set not starting properly and finally...when the set was just out of warranty, a circuit board attached to the LCD screen blew. Guess what, the board is not available as a separate item. Philip's wants to charge $4500.00 for the part alone! I paid $1800.00 for this piece of junk. I look at this as tuition for the education I received dealing with this substandard company. Do yourself a favor, buy a SONY. I did and now I'm happy.

Rating :

Nothing but problems

I would never buy another Philips LCD again. The HD blacks out occaisionally. You can't upgrade the mounting hardware, you can't use a normal component cable, when you use the HDMI, the audio has to be sent with the cable(the turn off all other audio connections). So if you use a provider like comcast that doesn't send audio over DVI, you can't hear anything. This LCD has been a nightmare. for $1500

Rating :

Great deal while it lasted!

I ordered and received the model off the Philips outlet store $999 - $200 discount which I consider a very good deal. The set arrived quickly and in good condition.

None of the accessories other than a stand were included (ac cord, remote control, cables and wall mount) with the original shipment. A call to Phillips customer support got a quick response that they will send the items as the become available. The ac cord arrived in two days with a packing slip stating stand and remote are back-ordered. The wall mount is not available, but I would want a tilting one if I were to wall mount.

The stand they shipped originally was for a much bigger tv.

If Philips comes thru with their promise I will remain happy.

I will echo the statements by other customers. This is not the ideal hdtv (picture, connections, etc.) but an excellent set for $800.

Not so Good, Not so Bad

I bought this TV in philips outlet for 750$. Used it for less than month now.

Pros
----
1. Cheap, inexpensive, TV for bedrooms or kitchen.
2. Picture quality seemed ok with HD , so far.
3. Look and Feel of the TV is good.

Cons
----
1. Only one HD-Analog connection (Component to VGA)
* Beware of this, though the TV has component input, its not HD Capable unlike all other TVs. Philips gave a special Component to VGA cord, which can be used for regular dvd player progressive scan(480p).
2. Only one HD-Digital connection (HDMI)
3. Though the TV says 16:9, I can only see 15:9 in wide screen format.
4. Black levels are not as dark, it may be scenario with all LCD TVs. Plasmas has dark black levels.
5. Poor and long waiting on customer service. I think philips should consider outsourcing customer service, instead of torturing customers with long waits.
6. Very badly packaged, so open the package cautiously.
7. Wall mountable is included, but it is not tiltable.
8. Very very annoyingly poorly written manual, dont expect anything from it.

Question : How high should sharpness level be set on lcd hdtv?
We just had our LCD HDTV installed yesterday. It's a Samsung 40 inch. The HD channels look great. The non HD channels look good too but are a little blurry when up close to the TV. Will increasing the sharpness level make the picture more clear or is it the opposite? It was set up at 25% I increased it to 50% and I can't really tell if it's better or worse. Thanks

Answer:
It all depends on how noisy the signal is. If you have a really clean signal, you can run the sharpness up quite a bit before you'll see negative effects like edge ringing and graininess.I'm getting my digital signal over-the-air (antenna) and the signal is so clean that I can max out the sharpness and it still looks great. I generally leave it at about 75%. I'm viewing the shows on an older non-HD CRT. The situation might well be different on an HD set.

Question : I have a Sanyo LCD HDTV that I am trying to connect to my my laptop computer how do I do this?
I am trying to use an s video cord to connect my tv and my laptop togetherThe tv is a sanyo lcd hdtv and the laptop is an HP. Can anyone tell me the steps to use my tv as a monitor? My computer isn't even recognizing the tv. I am also using windows 7 ultimate.

Answer:
You neglected to mention what kind of video ports are on your HP and on the Sanyo LCD HDTV. That's important info, because you might have better alternatives available than that S-video crap.Keep in mind the best connection is HDMI, which some HP laptops have and virtually all HDTVs also have. HDMI is the best and easiest way to connect a laptop to an HDTV.Some HDTVs also have a VGA input, which most HP laptops also have. This is also a good way to connect a laptop to an HDTV.Both HDMI and VGA are FAR superior to S-video. Don't use that low-definition S-video garbage except as a last resort.

Question : Can I use a 1080p lcd hdtv as a pc monitor picture-quality wise?
I know that I can plug it in. But what about using say a 40" 1080p lcd hdtv as a montitor? Would it look as crisp as the 24" viewsonic I have now? Should I stick with lcd's that are MADE to be pc monitors? Thanks!

Answer:
I use my 52" Sony Bravia LCD HDTV as a computer monitor. It's connected to my computer using a DVI-to-HDMI cable, displaying 1080p HIgh Definition (1920x1080 resolution). And it looks fabulous. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/armchairaviator/computer/IMG_0880c.jpgThe text is razor-sharp, the graphics clear and vivid. I can't be happier with the result.A lot depends on the quality of the TV set. An upper-end set like a Sony Bravia or Sharp Aquos will look nice. Lower-end sets might not look as nice.Hope this helps.

Question : How well does a lcd hdtv work as a computer monitor?
A lcd hdtv i am buying has a computer input. Will it look just as good as my computer monitor? it would save me some space.

Answer:
It may depend on the make, but it will work well as a computer monitor.I got my laptop hooked up to my LCD TV using an inexpensive VGA cable (same as the cable from your CPU to the computer monitor) to view my jpeg digital pictures. I could use the mouse to find my photo directories, veiw photos as a slide, etc. When I hooked up the cable, I had the option of using the TV as the computer monitor or have both the laptop screen and the TV display on.

Question : How do I attach my Dell Laptop to my Polaroid LCD HDTV?
I have a Dell Latitude D820 laptop and recently just purchased a Polaroid 26" LCD HDTV. I was told at circuit city that I would be able to hook up my laptop to the tv monitor without having to purchase any additional attachments. But from observing the cords that came with the tv and those that I have with my laptop it doesnt seem possible. Anyone know how to hook it up?

Answer:
Most likely you will have an s-video or composite(rca) output from your laptop. Youll need to buy the cable to run from the laptop to the tv.

yes vga to vga will work for the video but you need to get a rca to 1/8" jack y cable to get your left and right audio, and make sure its a stereo jack not mono, and you should be fine.

Question : How do i connect my Toshiba Satellite Laptop To my LCD HDTV through VGA and HDMI adapters?
I have a toshiba satellite laptop and trying to connect it to my LCD HDTV, i got the VGA to DVI to HDMI cable adapter and plugged that into my tv but it wont come up on the tv.

Answer:
Sorry, but you cannot connect VGA to HDMI. That will NEVER work.VGA is an analog signal. HDMI requires a digital DVI video signal to work. The DVI-to-VGA adapter cannot be used that way. It only works for connecting a graphics card DVI-I port to a VGA monitor, because a DVI-I output also sends out a VGA signal.

Question : LCD HDTV do i need a converter box and antenna?
I have an lcd hdtv by magnavox. I do not have cable and want to be able to watch tv. Do i need an antenna or just the converter box to pick up local channels? I am a little confused on what exactly the converter box is able to do.

Answer:
If your TV is an HDTV (and not a "HD ready" TV), you just need to attach a TV antenna to it and have the TV scan for digital antenna channels. (Hint: if there is no place in the TVs menu to scan for digital channels, it doesn't have a digital tuner and isn't a "HDTV".)A HDTV already has a digital (ATSC) tuner built into it. A "HD ready" TV doesn't have a digital tuner built into it and would need a converter box or HD tuner to receive digital broadcasts.A converter box is connected between an antenna and older TVs. The box takes the digital signals that the antenna picks up (ATSC) and "converts" one of them to the older analog type (NTSC) that non-digital TVs can understand. The only reason that you might want to connect a converter box to a HDTV is if the converter has a better tuner than the one that's built into the HDTV. What kind of antenna you need depends on where you live. In North America all TV antennas can pick up digital broadcasts, so feel free to attach any old TV antenna that you have and give it a try.
